In 2023, we engaged Build and Construct to do an extensive renovation on our property in Riddell Road, Glendowie. Nick Hern was the head builder and a total pleasure to work with. He managed our project superbly, and we are delighted with the result.

From the beginning, Nick’s organisational skills and attention to detail were outstanding. He thought ahead about all aspects of our project and organised his sub-contractors accordingly. Nick is a great communicator and kept us well informed as our project progressed. Nothing was too much of a problem, and he had great suggestions and initiative when issues did arise (as they do with any renovation—e.g. supply delays). He managed our budget and offered alternatives and solutions.

His contract was excellent, with transparency around the process and the pricing. Nick would always get 2–3 quotes for any materials, and we were involved in the decision-making each step of the way. Nick has an excellent work ethic. He and his team were punctual, polite, and hard-working. If Nick couldn’t be on site, he ensured his partner Harry or another colleague was briefed and available to us. He always made sure his team had tasks lined up and clear instructions.

Nick completed all regulatory requirements along the way. He booked engineering, drainage, and council inspections in advance and ensured all compliance was met. He liaised with the architect, designers, and contractors professionally and respectfully. Weekly site inspections and progress meetings were conducted when needed, and the site was always kept neat and tidy. Nick was also extremely respectful to our neighbours, who had to endure an 18-month disruption to their shared driveway, as well as construction noise and dust. He was thoughtful and helpful to them when planning deliveries or limiting access.

Our house has been finished to a very high standard, and we are thrilled with the result.
We have no hesitation in recommending Nick and would not hesitate to have him back for our future projects.

We first approached Harry and Nick with a small job to replace some bi-fold doors and a window. Before we knew it, the Auckland flood tipped 80cm of water through our whole house—and the job got bigger!

Every room needed attention: a new kitchen, two new bathrooms, straightened and moved walls, new linings, new plumbing, new electrics, new paint… and of course, the window and bi-fold doors!

The quality of the work is unquestionably top-notch, far exceeding our expectations. Our house is simply beautiful—and we are those fussy clients.

Harry and all the subbies are quality tradespeople, and as a bonus, genuinely good people who were always a pleasure to work with. What we are most appreciative of, however, was their patience. It turns out insurance companies need a whole lot more paperwork than the average renovation, and whatever we needed, the team got it to us.

The effort to get us back in our home before Christmas was massive and meant so much.
