Build and Construct was founded in 2021 by Harry Clark and Nick Hern — two licensed building practitioners who had spent years working on high-end residential projects across Auckland and wanted to do things differently.
Most building companies grow by taking on more projects than their directors can personally oversee. We've deliberately chosen not to do that. We take on a select number of projects each year so that Harry or Nick is on every site, every day — not a project manager you've never met. That hands-on involvement is what allows us to guarantee the quality and communication our clients expect.
We're proud members of the New Zealand Certified Builders Association (NZCB) and both hold Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) status. Every project we complete meets full Auckland Council compliance, and every quote we provide is transparent, itemised, and honest.
Meet the directors

Harry Clark has always had a strong interest in the trades. He began his career studying project management and quantity surveying at university but quickly recognised that hands-on, practical experience would provide a deeper understanding of construction management. In 2013, he made the decision to pursue a building apprenticeship.
Harry spent his early career with a small residential building company specialising in high-end renovations and new builds. The intimate team environment provided a highly practical learning experience, allowing him to develop a broad and in-depth knowledge of the building trade.
Following his apprenticeship, Harry joined Evolution Builders, where he contributed to the 2021 House of the Year project, further cementing his experience in premium residential construction. He later joined J R Hoskins Carpenters, where he was proud to work on the restoration of a heritage building, an experience that deepened his appreciation for craftsmanship and architectural preservation.
Across each role, Harry developed a broad and precise understanding of what separates good building work from exceptional building work. That experience is the foundation of Build and Construct — a company built on the belief that Auckland homeowners deserve a builder who treats their home with the same care they would their own.

Nick Hern developed a strong interest in the trades during high school, ultimately choosing a more hands-on path into the construction industry. He went on to complete a building apprenticeship, gaining practical experience with respected companies such as All Form Construction and Urry Burgess Construction - both known for delivering high-end residential and commercial projects.
Working on site across a range of complex builds gave Nick a deep understanding of both the technical and practical sides of construction. He quickly developed a reputation for his attention to detail, strong work ethic, and ability to manage the pressures of high-spec projects. These early experiences shaped his approach to quality and craftsmanship, which remain core to his work today.
It was during his time playing rugby at University Rugby Club that Nick met future business partner Harry Clark. The two often discussed the idea of building something of their own, driven by a shared vision for delivering high-quality work with integrity and precision. In 2020, they took the leap and co-founded Build & Construct. Since then, the business has grown steadily, delivering a wide range of residential projects across Auckland.
Outside of work, Nick enjoys spending time with his young family and playing golf. Whether on site or off, he brings the same focus, precision, and genuine care for the work that have defined his career from day one.
How we work
With a lean, focused team, Harry and Nick are closely involved in every project Build and Construct takes on. For larger builds, we each take on a foreman role - meaning we're on site daily, overseeing trades, managing schedules, and making sure the work meets our standards at every stage.
For smaller projects, we divide responsibilities to ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Our combined experience across new builds, renovations, extensions, heritage restoration, and high-end residential construction means we bring genuine expertise to every type of project - not just the ones that look good in a portfolio.
